Ugly Mutts Foster families are the very backbone of the rescue. As we are not a shelter we depend on people who are willing to open their heart and their home to help save the lives of dogs who are in danger of being euthanized mainly due to a lack of space at the shelter. Most of the dogs have been picked up as strays and we have very little background knowledge of them. Some are coming from private homes where their owners are no longer able to care for them, for a variety of reasons. Most of the dogs in need of rescue are in the medium to large size, which is the hardest to find foster homes for.
Every dog we rescue has been temperament tested to ensure they have the ability to become a good family companion and are health assessed and given any necessary treatments as well as updated vaccinations, and spayed or neutered if appropriate. If you have other pets in the home, we ask that you ensure their vaccinations are up to date.
Prior to fostering a dog you will be given a chance to meet with an Ugly Mutts Coordinator and given an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about fostering. As well, you will receive an Ugly Mutts Foster Guide which will give you informative information on bringing your foster dog home, what to watch for in regard to health issues, and tips on feeding and training. As well, you will have access to our coordinators for any help you need along the way.
When you are ready for your first dog you will receive a picture and some information about who the dog is, prior to receiving the dog. All of the dogs you foster will have been chosen based on your requirements, your family situation and your abilities, to ensure there is an easy transition into your home. Ugly Mutts will supply you with everything you need to care for the dog, you supply the love.
As a foster parent you will play a key role by helping to further evaluate the dogs in your care and as such you become a crucial part of our Dog Adoption Team. From the time a dog is posted for adoption it could be anywhere from two weeks to a few months to find their perfect match.
While you give the dogs the love and care they need, our coordinators are here to support you along the way and to ensure that your decision to foster an Ugly Mutts dog is a fun and rewarding experience for your entire family.
